Europe : WiMAX Day reports that at the recent 3GSM conference in Barcelona, Vodafone CEO Arun Sarin delivered a rare glimpse of the future and warned the mobile industry of new technologies that will usurp their business and the impending obsolescence of the 3G standard. “As an industry it takes us a long time to get things done; we need to move faster otherwise others will eat our lunch,” said Sarin ( inset ).

“Is WiMAX the Elephant in the room?” someone asked from the audience. Sarin noted that WiMAX is now a serious contender for mobile broadband. “It is an interesting technology that’s not really ready for prime time the way that we build our networks today,” Sarin said, referring to current circuit-switched mobile networks that were built for voice, and which will not be in synch with the future data-driven 4G networks that will use IP-OFDM technology.

According to WiMAX Day, the compelling point that Sarin drives home is that the mobile industry is shackled with old technology that cannot stand-up to the current demands of data hungry consumers. The reality for most mobile networks is that they must quickly find new technologies if they are to remain in the game.

With dwindling revenue from voice services, Sarin told listeners that mobile networks must speed the development of data services to remain competitive. “If we don’t build our broadband networks we will have this opportunity taken away from us,” Sarin said, and added confidently “We need to seize the moment here.”

With such emphatic statements, one might think that Mr Sarin held a crystal ball in his hip pocket. He intimated that Vodafone has grown frustrated with the pace of GSM development, and thus it became evident that Sarin was urging the mobile industry to prepare for an eventual paradigm shift.

Vodafone an active WiMAX player
For some time Vodafone has distanced itself from the 3G vs WiMAX debate, and for good reason, WiMAX Day noted. Vodafone partners and subsidiaries are already planning WiMAX babies of their own. In fact they are more than just a little bit pregnant. According to publicly available data, Vodafone has already placed a significant bet on WiMAX, with investment, op’s and network infrastructure in various stages of deployment.

Perhaps that is why Mr Sarin wisely decided that the 3GSM conference was the appropriate platform to herald the WiMAX revolution, while choosing very carefully any words that might seem to disparage other technologies. An each-way bet.

WiMAX deployed in France
Vodafone subsidiary SFR in France has already deployed a WiMAX network with its partner Neuf Cegetel, and according to several sources, has been testing the integration of WiMAX with its mobile services.

Vodafone network partner MTC-Vodafone recently won a license for WiMAX spectrum in Bahrain, and according to sources there, the service should offer full mobility by next year. Moreover, the company is also expected to bid on WiMAX licenses to be auctioned in Egypt and Saudi Arabia in the coming months.

Vodafone acquired a WiMAX license in Greece last year, and is deploying a network in Malta. The company also has been testing WiMAX in New Zealand, and in South Africa, Alan Knott-Craig, the CEO of Vodafone subsidiary Vodacom, voiced his frustration with the delayed auction of WiMAX licenses last November and declared “We don’t have a WiMAX licence and I don’t want to wait anymore!”

3G fails to score
The technology LTE, an upgrade of current 3G technology, has been cited as the only potential competitor to WiMAX. However many question whether it can stand the muster of tomorrow’s 4G networks. Mr. Sarin admitted that LTE is far from being implemented, let alone standardised, and astonished his audience by suggesting that LTE may not even be supported by Vodafone in the future.

Further damaging the outlook for LTE, Hakan Djuphammar, systems architecture director at Ericsson, said “if Ericsson sees any business possibilities in WiMAX, it can quickly develop the standard,” according to a report in Dagens Nyheter. This sounds like something Sony would have said in 1988 shortly before it abandoned Betamax for the VHS standard, as Ericsson is the prime developer of LTE technology.

Padmasree Warrior, chief technology officer at Motorola, said during the conference that WiMAX is a far superior technology that Motorola ardently supports, and that within three years, WiMAX will be fully developed and deployed, while LTE may not even be on the market.

The cloud over 3G grew darker when Mr Sarin noted that less than 10% of Vodafone revenues are derived from 3G services. Thus, adopting WiMAX over LTE is a clever “bet on every number of the roulette wheel” strategy, one that eventually will allow Vodafone to dovetail into the “total communications” solution, a mantra that CEO Sarin now champions.

Time to market seems mission critical for mobile broadband technologies, and most speakers at the 3GSM conference seemed convinced that the wireless broadband crown already has been passed to WiMAX.

Mr Sarin left no doubt that he is convinced of the threat posed to LTE technology by WiMAX. “The industry could be left arguing over standards while WiMAX services roll out and make [LTE irrelevant.”

We’re going to see more phones with built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, but at the moment there are only a handful doing the rounds. These include the Benefon Twig, Mio A701, O2 Xda Orbit, HTC P3300, the upcoming Nokia N95 and, of course, T-Mobile’s MDA Compact III. The convenience of having a GPS receiver embedded into the phone is obvious and edges these smartphones closer to challenging the functionality of their dedicated sat nav adversaries.T-Mobile’s MDA Compact III is the latest flame in the operator’s Windows-powered MDA Compact smartphone series, and arrives bundled with CoPilot’s Live 6 Pocket PC sat nav solution. Of course, this package is exclusive to T-Mobile and initial pricing is £60 on the Flext 35 (£35 per month), plus the Web’n’Walk £7.50 tariffs (£42.50 a month). For the £7.50 supplement, Web’n’Walk offers unlimited webbrowsing.

As the name suggests, this smartphone is very compact for a PocketPC handset and compared to T-Mobile’s Vario range, it’s extremely pocket-friendly, although it’s quite wide and will still cause a slight bulge in the trouser pouch. However, at 16.8mm thick, it’s relatively trim and is by far the most stylish of T-Mobile’s range. It also sports a lovely grey tactile soft paint finish.

Powered by the latest Windows 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition OS, the user interface is T-Mobile-flavoured but doesn’t deviate much from past Windows PocketPC user interfaces.

The MDA Compact III offers three navigation techniques: a stylus-driven touch-screen; a trackwheel and a trackball (the last two are for one-handed operation). Touch-screen navigation works well and is more efficient and accurate, but for users who get frustrated at continually clamouring for the stylus, the alternatives are quite effective. The silver scroll may feel a bit loose, but it clicks along nicely and is perfect for trawling quickly through text and vast lists. The trackball is a new method, recently employed on the BlackBerry 8100 Pearl handset and is essentially a loose-fitted half-ball that responds to a brush or nudge from your thumb. It takes time to gauge its sensitivity (or lack of), but you may find yourself resorting to the other two methods at first. Stick with it, though, and you’ll soon master its sometimes skittish manner.

Dedicated buttons for firing up the sat nav application and accessing the Web’n’Walk browser sit on the front control panel. The full HTML internet browser works well on the Compact III’s sizeable 2.8-inch screen and you can switch to landscape mode for more comfortable surfing. 3G and Wi-Fi connectivity are conspicuous by their absence, so it’s left to EDGE technology to download the web pages and access email at brisk speeds. It seems a strange move from T-Mobile to omit 3G and especially Wi-Fi. HTC and O2 have similar models with the P3300 and Xda Orbit that both pack built-in Wi-Fi (it’s worth noting that HTC manufactures both the MDA Compact III and Xda Orbit). Wi-Fi connectivity plays an increasingly bigger role in mobile communications with the advent of VoIP, so it’s criminal that T-Mobile has dropped it, let alone excluded 3G as well.

As you would expect from a Windows-run smartphone, the MDA Compact III offers the full PIM functionality suite and synchronisation of your calendar, contacts and task with Outlook on your PC. The Windows 5.0 OS also integrates push-email capabilities and a new backup facility that, unlike past Windows smartphones, doesn’t lose data when the battery runs dry. Setting up your push-email still relies on you knowing your server settings and manually inputting them. This procedure isn’t really that intuitive, especially for the first timer.

For the serious business ally, a full complement of Microsoft Windows Office applications, including Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile, is on hand. You can create and edit Word and Excel but this doesn’t stretch to PowerPoint where you can only read documents. For writing long emails, Word or Excel documents, a virtual keyboard appears on screen and it’s pretty straightforward, if a little slow, to operate via a stylus.

It may not concern the strict business type, but a two-megapixel camera is available for photos and recording video footage. The shutter button sits on the side, so you hold the phone in landscape form to take pictures. The large display moonlights as a great viewfinder and the shutterbug shoots in a standard 1600×1200-pixel resolution. There’s no flash, but you can alter the brightness and lighting conditions on screen using the stylus, which proves an exasperating experience especially if you want to take a quick snap. The picture quality is in line with most other two-megapixel camera, so you might get the odd photo worth printing, but otherwise it’s pretty standard.

Leaving out Wi-Fi may prove to be an oversight, especially when you can get the same device (only cosmetically different) with Wi-Fi and CoPilot sat nav software on O2’s Xda Orbit. Still, if Wi-Fi and 3G aren’t a consideration and you’re in the market for a sat nav smartphone, then T-Mobile’s sleek MDA Compact III can’t be faulted.

3G has used ALK’s CoPilot Live 6 sat nav solution on the Symbian-based Nokia N70 before, and its Windows solution runs pretty much along the same lines. As you already know, the T-Mobile MDA Compact III has a built-in GPS receiver (its SIRF 3 chip is the best around at this level), so you don’t have to worry about connecting to an extra Bluetooth receiver.

To get started, insert the 256MB microSD card, which contains the software and street-level mapping for Ireland and the UK. The slot is located behind the battery, so if you need to swap cards frequently, it’s a bit of a bind. You also receive extra discs of mapping for western European major roads, but you will have to load these via the PC to another microSD card (you can pick up a 1GB card for £15 at www.mymemory.co.uk).

You can navigate to your desired destination in a number of ways using any address (with icons for home, work, favourites, recent journeys and saved trip). You can use stored contacts, its millions of stored POIs (Points of Interest) and any UK seven-digit postcode. You can pick a point on the map, or enter a latitude/longitude location. If your journey takes you via different destinations, you can plan an itinerary, adding stops and setting alarms for welcome breaks if you get tired over the long drive. And for peace of mind, you can preview the route before embarking. You can also programme CoPilot to take the quickest or shortest route possible and to avoid major roads
Getting a GPS fix from a cold start takes a couple of minutes, but this improves over time and you can even pick up satellites in urban canyons. The CoPilot Live 6 software offers 2D or 3D map views and very helpful ‘distance to next turn’ icons in the corner of the screen to prepare drivers. These also appear full-screen in the Driver Safety mode. The turn-by-turn voice instructions are audible, but you will need to maximise the volume to hear it over the noisier motorway environment.

You receive a free two-year subscription to the Live Traffic update service that’s relayed to your phone via GPRS connection. This is worth noting because you pay for unlimited web access with the Web’n’Walk tariff, so you won’t be stung with hidden GPRS data charges. The traffic data is provided by ITIS (www.itis.com.my). If you receive news of an accident or traffic jam, it will give you the option of re-routing around the offending incident. Similarly, if you take a wrong turn or detour, CoPilot will automatically get you back on course.

When navigating to your destination, this phone solution works well, although one annoying setback is the touch-screen’s lack of sensitivity when using your fingers. Each time you want to change your settings, you need to use the stylus. This a bit fiddly when it’s mounted on the supplied bracket. Along with the sturdy car screen-mounting bracket, you also get an in-car charger.

Other great features include the London congestion warning zone, walking mode so you can be guided around city streets and a live tracking and messaging service that lets friends and family monitor your progress from ALK’s website.

The T-Mobile MDA Compact III, together with Co-Pilot Live 6, is a tidy package, delivering a feature- rich sat nav solution that goes some way to challenging dedicated sat nav systems like the TomTom Go and Navman iCN range. However, the Windows OS sometimes make pre-journey planning and operation slow while the touch-screen usability issue can grate. It just falls short but it’s not far off TomTom et al.

The upgrade to HSDPA and EDGE technologies is progressing according to plans, and will be finished in the following months. 70 percent of Mobitel’s networks have already been upgraded. Mobitel is upgrading its mobile networks efficiently and according to plans. Mobitel’s teams of technicians have already enabled megabit transfer speeds with HSDPA technology (up to 3.6 Mbps) in 70 percent of the Mobitel UMTS network. The upgrade of the GSM network to EDGE technology is also progressing quickly. Both networks will be completely upgraded in the following months.

Mitja Štular, Mobitel’s CTO: “I am very pleased with the headway of Mobitel’s networks upgrade. Our goal is to give our users the best user experience in all the places where Mobitel’s networks have coverage. Our networks are among the best and most cutting edge in the world.”

Mobitel UMTS coverage now reaches 71.8% of the population. The use of Mobitel UMTS is spreading fast, as there are already 120 thousand users of third generation mobile telecommunications.

Mobitel also at Planica
Mobitel will again be ensuring the coverage of the UMTS/HSDPA network in Planica this year. All users will have access to an in-depth coverage of all the events on the Planet portal. Until 15th March Planet will also be hosting a grand competition “Take a Busload of Your Friends to Planica”. Planet will take the lucky winner to see the finals of World cup ski jumps, which will be held on 25th March in Planica, and will do so with a bus, on which all of the winner’s friends are also invited. The competition questions and content about Planica can be found on the mobile Planet portal under the headings “Novo” (New) and “Šport” (Sports), and for a quick access to the competition they can send an SMS message with the word P PLANICA to 1919.

Europe : Nokia announced two mobile advertising services. Nokia Ad Service is a fully managed service for advertisers to conduct targeted advertising on mobile services and applications. Nokia Ad Service consists of a group of mobile publishers forming a mobile ad network and a platform to deploy, manage and optimize mobile advertising campaigns. Nokia also introduced Nokia Advertising Connector, a private label service for third party Publishers and Advertising Aggregators that want to extend to relevant mobile advertising. Nokia Advertising Connector operates as an intelligent switch, selecting between text, visual, audio and video ads – depending on the user’s context – and feeding the ad to the device.

Nokia Ad Service

“As advertisers struggle to reach personalized targeting with traditional media such as print and TV, mobile advertising is becoming an increasingly attractive channel for brands,” said Tom Henriksson, Director of Nokia Ad Service at Nokia Emerging Business Unit. “We have completed a number of pilot campaigns with advertisers and mobile publishers for testing the Nokia ad serving technology and consumer experience. The feedback has been very positive from all parties.”

Nokia Ad Service fulfills different types of advertising needs such as advertisers deploying global mobile campaigns, agencies offering mobile advertising to complement traditional media initiatives, and publishers seeking new business models and a larger consumer audience. Nokia Ad Service serves mobile operators as a solution provider bringing the mobile advertising model to operator services, driving new and sustainable revenue streams. Nokia Ad Service simplifies the mobile advertising process by supporting & managing the full campaign lifecycle for advertisers including planning, deploying, optimizing, and reporting. Typical mediums of experience for mobile advertisements are in the form of interactive content like banner ads in browsing services, ads in applications, and videos.

Nokia Ad Service will begin its operations in Europe with a kick-off at ad:tech, an interactive marketing event in Paris, France on March 6th-7th, 2007 and globally in the second half of 2007.

Nokia Advertising Connector

“With Nokia Advertising Connector we are partnering with newspaper publishers, other traditional media companies, aggregators, platform companies, operators and internet companies to help them serve their current advertisers by offering easy access to a mobile audience” says Matthew Snyder, Head of Business Development, Nokia Multimedia, Advertising Business Program. “We have an aggregator interface for plugging partners’ platforms into the Connector – Nokia being in the role of platform service provider. Think of the Connector as a one-stop delivery point with intelligence”.

Nokia Advertising Connector enables delivery of targeted ads to mobile devices. Ads will be closely tied and optimised to specific multimedia applications, such as reading digital newspaper content, watching TV, listening to music or looking at directions on maps. Nokia offers access to the platform for third parties and enables their ad sales teams to sell for the mobile channel. Nokia Advertising Connector supports so called CPA (cost per action) model and it provides usage data from mobile devices for enabling targeted ad selection and delivery to users’ devices. A key part of the platform will be the easy-to-use reporting and analytics tools for Publishers to manage their advertisers ROI (Return on investment).

Nokia Advertising Connector will run several pilots during the coming months and is planned to become commercially available by the end of 2007.

A memorycard as small as 128 Mb is sufficient to store a full length feature film. You can watch your DVDs on the go, on any Symbian UIQ-based phone, such as the Sony Ericsson P900-series, from a postage stamp size memory card.

The software installs an encoding package on your Windows XP computer, you insert a DVD in the drive and with only two clicks, the software turns it into a super small movie file, which will play on the built-in mediaplayer of the phone.

No extra software needs to be installed on the phone itself. The headset or the built-in speaker can be used to listen to the sound. Subtitled and foreign language DVDs are also supported.

Feature films look crisp and sharp on the phone and still fit on a relatively small Memorystick Duo card. The free tryout version allows users to convert 5 minutes of a DVD.

*Fullscreen feature only available on P900/P910
